First Look: Dunkirk

Christopher Nolan on the set of Dunkirk

Warner Brothers have released the announcement trailer for one of 2017's most anticipated releases, Christopher Nolan's WWII drama Dunkirk.

Taking to the battlefield, Nolan details Operation Dunkirk which saw the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and other Allied troops from the French seaport town of Dunkirk. With a total of 338,226 soldiers rescued over the course of eight days by a hastily assembled fleet of British destroyers, merchant marine boats, fishing boats, and lifeboats, it's not wonder that Prime Minister Winston Churchill hailed the rescue as "a miracle of deliverance."

The trailer itself contains characteristically impressive compositions from cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, who also collaborated with Nolan on 2014's Interstellar. The final shot is that of a crowded boat with one young soldier looking up before the rest of the young men fearfully cower in reaction to a plane crashing overhead.

Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, and recent Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner Mark Rylance support a cast of relative unknowns, including Fionn Whitehead, Aneurin Barnard, Jack Lowden, Barry Keoghan, and One Directioner Harry Styles.

The film is scheduled for release on July 21, 2017. Watch the announcement trailer below.
